Terribly Happy (2008)

Robert Hansen, 34, a young police officer from Copenhagen, is transferred against his will to the small town of Skarrild in Southern Jutland as a substitute Marshall. The transfer is Robert's chance to start over. Whether he is allowed to return to his job in Copenhagen, all depends on how well he performs in this frontier town.

Anyone who's a fan of foreign cinema and enjoys the Coen brothers will lick this right up, if they can find it. Danish export follows a simple fish-out-of-water premise, invests it with all the requisite neo-noir trappings, and a deliberately kooky, yet subdued sense of humor. It all makes for a winning combination, and the film is thoroughly engrossing from start to finish. The cast is all wonderful, led by Jakob Cedergren, Kim Bodnia, and Lene Maria Christensen. If you can't wait until "True Grit" for your next Coen brothers fix, this film will more than satisfy your needs.

Excellent thriller. In the vein of "Blood Simple," "Blue Velvet" and "Following". Well written, photographed, acted, everything. Director Henrik Ruben Genz has been knocking on the doors for years to get a chance to make a movie and he's made the most of it. Recommended.

A dramatic we-take-care-of-are-own yarn, with some sweet unexpected turn abouts (for the greater good). I loved the drinking contest and knowing nothing good could come of it scene. An excellent film.

Terribly Happy is, simply put, wonderfully bizarre. From it's unsettling atmosphere, striking style, and darker than black sense of humor...Once this Danish noir catches you off guard with one of it's many surreal twists and turns, you're in for an engrossingly odd adventure.

Subversion of genre thing going on here. Starts out as a dark comedy, evolves into disturbing thriller. Super atmospheric.
