One of America's top documentary filmmakers turns his attention to the outrageous and nearly unbelievable story of Joyce McKinney, a former Miss Wyoming beauty queen who gained a great deal of notoriety after being accused of kidnapping a young Mormon missionary, restraining him in chains and raping him in 1977 England. The unbalanced McKinney is extensively interviewed, particularly about her ambition to write a memoir telling her side of the tale.

The movie is guilty of condescending toward its subjects, though most of them appear to be having a fabulous time telling tales.

Wow. If there was ever a character born to star in an Errol Morris film, Joyce McKinney is that character! This is a funny, terrifically entertaining biodoc, with a larger than life girl at its center. McKinney became tabloid fodder in the 70s when she supposedly (not according to her) kidnapped a mormon missionary and had her way with him for a few days, at which point, he shook his head out of the fog and stumbled back to church. In some ways this film is reminiscent of The Eyes of Tammy Faye, in that an almost cartoon character becomes humanized over the course of the film. The laughs are big at first, and become more informed over the course of the film.

A good documentary can take an ordinary story and make it extraordinary. Then there are the documentaries about stories so crazy it is hardto believe they are true. Tabloid falls in the latter category. And if you don't know the story of former Miss Wyoming Joyce McKinney, do yourself a favor and get this thoroughly entertaining and shocking film as soon as possible.
