John Sayles' component film is a disappointment only because we expect so much more from him. A good film on the pressures of community and the price that individuals are willing to pay to "sell out". Nonethless, we expect more.

Despite his fascinating subject and an impressive cast -- Sayles lets his story drift in too many directions, as if he'd lost his Florida road map somewhere along the way during his travels.

Rings true for the most part, and explores human nature - leashed and unleashed - in ways that resonate.

Ian Waldron-Mantgani 08 Sep 2002

Being a Sayles film, this has a way of looking at things with more patience and maturity than a plot summary might lead us to expect.

Phil Villarreal 01 Aug 2002

Sayles has an eye for the ways people of different ethnicities talk to and about others outside the group.
