A stunning, incredibly potent film that marked the end of the silent era. It begins and ends with sequences of alarming power, and although I found parts of the film to be unengaging, I cannot deny that it is a masterpiece.

This is a gorgeous film. It's suspenseful, it's got surprising flashes of humor and one of the beautiful, moving love stories ever captured on film. I saw this in a tiny youtube screen but even then, the film's beauty and Murnau's groundbreaking visuals still shone through. Fantastic performances by the two leads.

The last century of film history has yielded but a few gleaming examples of the heights the medium can attain. "Sunrise"--despite its subtlety, its quiet beauty, its minimalism--is a goddamn Titan of visual storytelling. I recently showed it to a group of friends and had the pleasure of watching this 80-year-old film evoke laughter, tears and stunned silence in all the right places. A masterpiece.
