Too long with unequal moments. The lead actress gives a very good portrayal of a women in the times. Pace is unequal at the end. At 2h30, the film could use a bit of script tightening or editing.

"Humans yearn to be alone and they long for death. Why else do we fight with those we love most?" Hauntingly beautiful movie by Lou Ye and his most refined work to date. A reminder that the Chinese student revolt in the late eighties not only was a political revolution, but also a sexual one, very much like the one in Europe twenty years earlier. For obvious reasons Lou Ye tones down the political content of the movie and focuses instead on the passionate love story between it's two main characters, even though it's possible to view their relationship as a mirror of the changes in Chinese society as a whole. The film boasts some of the most memorable acting performances and scenes in Chinese cinema today, like the terrifying beauty of Li Tis suicide or the inevitably sad last encounter between Yu Hong and Zhou Wei.

A sensational film overall; the film describes china in a visual language that is raw, urgent, and fresh â?? stripped of the traditional cultural framing. There are parts that feel pedantic, particularly the shots that take the viewer through the different historical events.

Interesting period piece during the TienAnMen Square revolt. While the movie does not really go in to the reasons for it, it is interesting to see the comparison of Chinese college students protesting for Democracy and the German students protesting for Communism later in the film. But for an interesting insight on the time, the "Making of" gives a unique glimpse, while this story is more of a soap opera. Hao Lei was brilliant in this film.

Not as ambitious as its story might suggest, this film about a group (maybe a generation) of college students who witnessed the Tiananmen massacre. It's filtered through a young woman and her relationship with another student along with their ups and downs. The film's second half fast forwards several years after the incident as to show the aimless and disillusioned lives these people led. The biggest fault of this was that the characters are so poorly fleshed out that by the time the film ends there is nothing but vague understanding of theses people despite all the heartbreaks and trauma they are made to suffer. The sex scenes, no matter how passionate or controversial, don't supply anything interesting things to say about the characters. It's as if the director simply stuck to the tried and true formula of "controversial/taboo historical topic + explicit sex = government ban = international interest and distribution".
