I was not expecting this to be what it was- a "love" story about a super-depressed girl who is ridiculous to the point of aggrivation, and a looooot of sex. Hello. I thought it was going to be more about Tienanmen Sq., but it turns out it was only a small part. The part with it was the best scene in the movie, and after that, it went somewhat downhill. The depiction of confusing relationships was realistic and relatable, but bleak. If you don't mind getting depressed for an evening, watch this.

Terrible, terrible movie, it did a lot to develop some characters at the beginning, then after she dropped out, it just sped through the rest of the film and one could only hope it ended soon. Are we to feel bad for Yu Hong who hops into bed with anybody? It was bad, but I give it credit, because its the first attempt to deal with that event that happened in central Beijing in the year between 1988 and 1990...

With Summer Palace, Lou Ye speaks more plainly in his own voice, tired at last of affecting Wong Kar Wai's florid style of filmmaking, though he is still treading the Wongian terrain of lovelorn melodrama.
