Spinning Plates (2013)

Spinning Plates is a documentary about three extraordinary restaurants and the incredible people who make them what they are. A cutting-edge restaurant named the seventh-best in the world whose chef must battle a life-threatening obstacle to pursue his passion. A 150-year-old family restaurant still standing only because of the unbreakable bond with its community. A fledgling Mexican restaurant whose owners are risking everything just to survive and provide for their young daughter. Their unforgettable stories of family, legacy, passion and survival come together to reveal how meaningful food can be, and the power it has to connect us to one another.

A really fascinating doc about the world of owning a restaurant. It takes on 3 that are all very different with the home cooking and high end restaurants having some great stories. Its amazing how much of themselves people can put into this work. The editing of these 3 stories together make these different not so different stories hum along and a great pace.

Director Joseph Levy is a fantastic storyteller. I clicked on a documentary, but instead I found stories of hope, hard work, community, family and more. Unexpected gem.

A love letter to that singular intersection of artistic innovation, cultural legacy, community pride, and family-sustaining (or -straining) commerce known as the restaurant.

Spinning Plates may inadvertently be one of the year's best films about class differences in America.

Doris Toumarkine 23 Oct 2013

Spinning Plates is rich indeed, but it's Levy's human subjects that are at the film's considerable heart.
