Sounder (1972) -- [8.0] -- Martin Ritt's film version of William H. Armstrong's Newbery Award winning novel is a beautiful slice of life picture about poor black sharecroppers weathering the Great Depression. The story is simple, but the characters are rich. Paul Winfield and Cicely Tyson give strong performances as the hard-working, fierce-loving parents. Young Kevin Hooks also does a good job as their oldest son, David Lee, who has a chance for a future far greater than their own. The film was Oscar-nominated for best picture, best actor (Winfield), best actress (Tyson), and best adapted screenplay. (That's James Best as the town sheriff, a role he would give a comic spin seven years later in "The Dukes of Hazzard".)

This was a favotite in the 1970's. First time I had seen Cicely Tyson act and the story line of the Mother keeping her children safe while her husband who would not hurt a fly, is sent to prison was so beautiful

If Sounder, an inteligent enough movie, avoids all the major pitfalls of its type, it also lacks the excitement that may have come from plumbing greater depths and discovering a few tougher, less accessible insights.

The family's solidarity in the face of intimidating odds -- poverty, racism, injustice -- gives the movie a humanistic, optimistic center.

Not terribly memorable, but some great performances
