He exposes the roots and history of Rap and then, through meeting many of its most famous protagonists, studies the living mechanism of the music to reveal 'The Art Of Rap'. This extraordinary film features unique performances from the entire cast, without resorting to archive material, to build a fresh and surprising take on the phenomenon that is Rap.

Excellent film. Ice got a perspective no other director/interviewer could have. 80% of the "freestyles" or "skillfully delivered, on the spot verses with no punch-ins" as i prefer to call them, were ill. Mos Def, Chino XL, Immortal Technique(wooooooo!), Ice T, Nas and Rakim deliverered the best ones to me. an emcee i flat out DO NOT like delivered one of the illest verses ever and his face was'nt revealed til it was finished, THAT was a surprise. It made me happy to see that real skills never rust(i.e Melle Mel, Grandmaster Cas, KRS and especially Moe Dee!!!). The aerial footage over NY and especially Los Angeles was breathtaking. Only two complaints out of 1 hour and 47 mins: The Eminem segment was basically a stand up blowjob. He spit a verse of his own(meh) and then a 20 year old Treach verse that inspired him(amazing). The last complaint would be a Kanye verse that was 3,000 bars and should've been only 8. Lastly, it was fresh to see emcees paying hommage to Ice, reciting his old verses. PLEASE SUPPORT THIS FILM.

The history of hip-hop shown in a way I haven't seen before - from the beginnings in NYC up through today's best lyricists like Eminem and Nas. Very well done & entertaining. A must-see for any Hip-Hop fan. On Netflix streaming, fyi.

Ice-T, the Original Gangster brings out the greatest revelations of the true masters of hip hop for all of it's fans. Eric B. and Rakim said "Don't Sweat the Technique" but you can't say no to Ice-T. The Art of Rap is a complicated yet engaging documentary for any true hip hop fan so it may be difficult for the feeble minded to approach it for the first time without trepidation. But with a line up like Eminem, Nas, Royce Da 5'9", Dr. Dre, Chuck D, Rakim, Grandmaster Caz, Afrika Bambaataa, B- Real, Lord Jamar, Immortal Technique, Kanye West, Kool Keith, KRS-One, Snoop Dogg, Big Daddy Kane, Common, Run- DMC, Ice Cube, Mos Def, Xzibit, Marley Marl, Doug E. Fresh, Kool Moe Dee, and Melle Mel how can any hip hop fan (strike that) how can any music fan ignore this film. This isn't about the cars, the girls, or the money (so if your looking for that you shouldn't be anywhere near this) it's about the craft and how it was formed which many people may have forgotten about, which is what makes this film so great
