Sleight (2017)

A young street magician is left to take care of his little sister after his mother's passing and turns to drug dealing in the Los Angeles party scene to keep a roof over their heads. When he gets into trouble with his supplier, his sister is kidnapped and he is forced to rely on both his sleight of hand and brilliant mind to save her.

Not bad. Entertaining enough to be worth watching. A bit rough around the edges.

I'm glad someone mentioned this film to me because I've barely seen in promoted, and it's really very good. It's more somber than I expected for a movie with so many of the elements of a superhero origin story. It's more of a thriller with a dash of Cronenbergian body horror, but it hints at Spider-Man, or maybe Static.

If I was probably thinking what normally everyone would be thinking, maybe Sleight would have received another chance and gained a higher score, but my opinion differs too anyways. I can't say for sure, but this film is sure on par with all future films directed by the director and that's saying much.

Sleight's payoff and take home messages are good enough to mostly forgive its glaring flaws.

This is why I love movies. When you're able to blend several genres together where the usual character development isn't what you think it will be. The lead role played by Latimore what spectacular. What I love more is on a small budget like this, how the camera work, the editing and the soundtrack were top notch. I hope to see more from JD Dillard. What's funny is, they left this movie open for a sequel.
