Weaving an unsavory tale about isolation, bullying, and familial dysfunction, Slapface looms like an uncomfortable truth that is too desolate in tone.

Writer/director Kipp expands his short into a feature that at times struggles to elongate an otherwise poignant message, leaving other worldbuilding details behind in a way that undercuts structural integrity. I’m all for awareness, but wonky narrative stumbles aren’t ignorable.

The underlying theme is fine, but the film itself is too ambiguous for its own good. The lines along which the story walks, ranging from psychodrama to horror, are not quite defined because the balance given by the filmmaker is not the best when he tackles them. I wouldn't say that what it lacks is subtlety, but finesse. It tries, but in the end fails to leave a mark.
