Anthony man delivers a great noir starring Farley Granger. Great Early Car Chase

would like to see a remake done today, as this hasn't aged well, though this is a worthy plot

Friday, June 8, 2012 (1950) Side Street THRILLER Farley Granger (Strangers On A Train) plays Joe, a part-time postman who unknowingly steals a bagful of money who didn't know it was part of an murder/ extortion scheme set up by one of New York City's respected counsillours. At the beginning viewers get to know how the protagonist got himself into this mess, leaving the question about how he gets himself out is intruiging but feels somewhat outdated despite well directed by veteran director Anthony Mann. 2.5 out of 4

Tight urban noir thanks to Anthony Mann's slack hold on the narrative, as well as his incongruous eye that shoots NYC like a unending maze of concrete. Farley Granger truly is a sympathetic simp as he steals some loot from a crooked lawyer. The car chase finale packs some punch, as does the last shot (which would have been more effective w/o the narration).

Voice-over is a common noir trait, but here it's done so horribly and is so entirely unnecessary that it becomes a drawback. Also, O'Connell really has to nothing to do except act clingy and concerned. But that's made up for by Jean Hagen, who is just wonderful as the boozy lounge singer. The film is really brutal at times, and perfectly captures the story of a guy who can't catch a break and always seems to do the wrong thing. The use of New York locations is utterly fantastic, highlighted by outstanding photography by Joseph Ruttenberg. The dingy streets, the hallways with peeling wallpaper, and of course the brilliant final chase, shot from high above the action. As a whole, the movie doesn't stand up as a complete masterpiece, but there are some exhilirating elements.
