Shock Head Soul (2012)

This cross-media documentary (film, installation and website) explores the life and writings of Daniel Paul Schreber. Doco/reenactment based on the diary of a respected German judge who was placed in a asylum yet was coherent enough to argue the difference between being mentally ill and a threat to society. Lots of talking heads and well acted but could have drawn out the issues better.

An original depiction of mental illness, using interviews with contemporary psychiatrists, a dramatisation of an historical case of schizophrenia, journal readings and even computer animation. It requires patience, and is definitely not for all tastes, but there is much to admire.

Psychological insight traded for astonishingly dull costume "drama", laughable dialogue and costumed talking heads.
