Waaaay over the top and unrealistic in its depiction of asylum life...but who cares? This movie is an enjoyable, pulpy satire of American conservatism, using a very rickety plot about a reporter in an asylum to critique mid-20th cent. American norms of race, socialism, and women. Good times.

A very involving film, but slightly too melodramatic regarding Constance Tower's character Cathy. She could have been tuned down one or two notches during her outcries, but I wouldn't say Peter Breck's character was overdoing things. :-) Our main character Johnny was very convincing at being both sane and insane at the same time. I have to salute Samuel Fuller for using that echoing voice-over, certainly got me straight into curious minds. What a crazy sanatorium, all those colorful inmates cracked me up, the professor was so funny behaving like a 6 year old. I really thought those imaginative sequences worked out, and the disturbing depiction of human behavior as well as the hallway fight scenes, which needs credit as well. Those fights were more violent and emotional than what is expected from this kind of film, but that being said I still think they suited the whole rough-edged film. This one sure gives 'One's Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest' heavy competition!

Gleefully free in its hilarious/tragic performances, as well as very complexly written and directed, but I just couldn't bear the stripper scene(s).

This is one of Fuller's masterpieces (of which there are many). it was this point in the early sixties where Fuller's raw journalistic realism began to mix with a proto-psychedelic quality of which this film is a great example. The energy of the film is so powerful even after all of this time and he is able to make the film entertaining on a certain level but laden with so much metaphorical layers it requires multiple viewings over time. The photography by Stanley Cortez is pristine (though Fuller himself filmed the color dream sequences in 16mm). As usual Fuller was ahead of his time with this film, which stands as a testament to his unique artistic vision and approach. A true American cinematic masterpiece.

Unruly mystery thriller. Caution is truly thrown to the wind as a journo feigns madness to gain access to the disturbed minds in an insane asylum. One of the best depictions of stark raving ever filmed.
