Merchant Ivory's first important film, which effectively launched the career of Felicity Kendal. Although fictional, the story is loosely based on her family's experiences in India during the mid-twentieth century. The Kendals, in fact, make up most of the major cast.

"Shakespeare Wallah" is a tribute to the gallantry, talent and courage of the Kendals. Its gentle humor, however, has a Chekhovian cast.

Surprisingly light and enjoyable early James Ivory film with luminous Felicity Kendal.

... a bittersweet drama of the twilight of a theatrical way of life.
