Seventh Son (2014)

John Gregory, who is a seventh son of a seventh son and also the local spook, has protected the country from witches, boggarts, ghouls and all manner of things that go bump in the night. However John is not young anymore, and has been seeking an apprentice to carry on his trade. Most have failed to survive. The last hope is a young farmer's son named Thomas Ward. This question of morality is a perfectly fine basis for a film, fantasy or otherwise, but Seventh Son doesn't know what to do with it.

I highly recommend people see this movie. There are lots of bad reviews for a movie that I thought was spectacular but it's better than you think. I think a lot of people are expecting Lord of the Rings in movie set in a similar landscape, while it's not the caliber of LOTR, it's a sci fi fantasy epic that had me looking up more lore on the movie. THe life and adventures of the Order of Spooks that Master Gregory comes from sounds promising and it worth making more movies about IMO. I thought the cast was great, the story was interesting, the creatures and landscapes looked nice also. I liked the action fight scenes, and it was interesting to see witches and warlocks transforming into dragons, bears, a some other creatures. The powers that they use are somewhat impressive. There is a lot more to this novel turned movie but apparently they couldn't include as much in a 2 hour movie, any longer and the average person probably wouldn't want to sit through it at a theater unless it's a big movie such as LOTR.

I really liked this. Glad I didn't pay any attention to the critics. I can see how not everybody would like it but I definitely did. I would say if you watched and liked RIPD you would enjoy this one.

The battle scenes are mercifully short --- thank you to director Sergey Bodrov --- which results in a brisk outing at an hour and forty-two minutes.
