Secret Honor (1984)

In his New Jersey study, Richard Nixon retraces the missteps of his political career, attempting to absolve himself of responsibility for Watergate and lambasting President Gerald Ford's decision to pardon him. His monologue explores his personal life and describes his upbringing and his mother. A tape recorder, a gun and whiskey are his only companions during his entire monologue, which is tinged with the vitriol and paranoia that puzzled the public during his presidency.

Phillip Baker Hall leads the entire one-man show that takes place in the study of a fictionalized Richard Nixon. He is absolutely fantastic in this, putting on one of the best performances ever. Unfortunately, next to no one has heard of this film. Absolutely worth the time as we watch Nixon go into his own madness for an hour and a half as he locks himself in a room, with a bottle of scotch, a gun, and a tape recorder...

Fascinating character study of Nixon. Philip Baker Hall proves himself to be one of the greatest by putting me on the edge of his seat, all by himself, in an office for an hour and a half. Altman's direction is good but not great, though he manages to find some creative shots in a restricting environement.

We begin to understand Nixon -- or at least this representation of him -- in a human way that press coverage or television speeches could never capture. This is because Hall's performance transcends the political baggage of the film itself.

This is the document of a wild boar thrust into a suit of bribes and dishonor rampaging against childhood wishes and the harsh realities of life and crime. One of the top visceral performances in cinema - filmed with a careful fluidity. IT BARKS!
