Secret Honor (1984)

In his New Jersey study, Richard Nixon retraces the missteps of his political career, attempting to absolve himself of responsibility for Watergate and lambasting President Gerald Ford's decision to pardon him. His monologue explores his personal life and describes his upbringing and his mother. A tape recorder, a gun and whiskey are his only companions during his entire monologue, which is tinged with the vitriol and paranoia that puzzled the public during his presidency.

Philp baker hall's carear is biluid around this movie. Yes, he wasn't given recognition until hard eight, 12 years after the fact but still. Also, this has the best ending altman ever did.

Philip Baker Hall's outrageous, scatterbrained portrayal of Nixon is the performance that actors should aspire to accomplish, as it truly does not get any better than this. The fact that Hall can carry an entire ninety minute film by himself is astonishing, and Secret Honor is compelling to no end.

The dramatic material, overheated to begin with, is hyped up by hysterical acting and further exaggerated by a busy mise-en-scene based on meaningless camera movements and space-destroying zooms.
