Second Hand Wedding (2008)

A small film with a big heart, SECOND HAND WEDDING is a bittersweet dramatic comedy set in the present, in a time when trademe and e-bay threaten the primeval urge for a firsthand crack at the second-hand. Jill keeps the dream alive until she is forced to confront the habits of a lifetime and concede that no bargain is worth her daughter's happiness. Father of the bride, Brian, quips that Cheryl's upcoming wedding will be the first time anyone in the Rose family has given something away - and that's the crux of it.

A sweet wee film with a heart. It made me want to go and explore the Kapiti Coast. Whoever played the mum (Geraldine Brophy?) was really good. Some of the minor characters were slightly ridiculous and over-acted (eg 'Sugarpuff' or whatever she was called).

It seems this little gem of a movie is fairly unknown outside of New Zealand, but if you can track it down, it's a hilarious slice of kiwiana. Very funny with its typical self depricating humour and a big slice of family heart. I just caught this on R4 DVD and hope it gets the recognition it deserves. Also New Zealanders will recognise heaps of faces from national TV shows, which is kinda fun. A genuine Indie treat!

Second Hand Wedding is a singular underachievement. Some NZ newspapers have compared the film to The Castle for its down-home modesty and charm. It has much to be modest about.

great movie as far as kiwi entertainment goes. I thought what made it interesting was the fact that a lot of the movie was filmed locally.
