Sea People (1999)

At 14, Amanda is a perfect swimmer and a great student. When the factory where his father works closes and he must go to work in another city, she feels very sad. One morning she meets the McRea, a very nice elderly couple who, like her, cannot live without the sea, although in another sense.

Fourteen-year-old Amanda lives with her brother, Sean, and their parents, James and Celia Forrest, in Rathlin, and old fishing community where stories about mermaids and sea people are the talk of the town. When her father gets a job in a new town, Amanda is distraught. She hides out in the abandoned Stellar Cannery where she witnesses an apparent suicide attempt. Amanda jumps into the icy water to save the old man, John McRae, who insists that he was just taking a dip. Mr. McRae takes Amanda home to meet his wife, Bridget. On her second visit to their home, Amanda is shocked to see the old couple asleep in two tanks of water. She flees from their house, convinced that her encounter with them will result in her being turned into a mermaid.

A quirky movie that has many levels of story to it, wrapped up in a very simplistic story line. Hume Cronyn and Joan Gregson were terrific as the sea people. Very much enjoyed.

No action - No special effects. Mostly because of a charming performance by a very likeable older couple, Sea People is nevertheless a good movie. It's a melodramatic drama centering around an emotional young teenage girl living in a small fishing village on the Atlantic Coast. So basically, it's a chick-flick. Well, I'll admit it - sometimes I like chick-flicks. This is a charming movie. It's just a touch TOO melodramatic at the end, but hey, that's a common complaint for me. Part of why I liked Sea People is that there are a few scenes of wide-eyed wonder. Also, the characters are good people - full of life. I like that kind of stuff. I think my daughters (5 & 8) would have liked it quite a bit, but even without any special effects they would have been freaked out in a couple places.

I ABSOLUTELY love this movie--it has many different elements in it & an intresting story line
