The sea, August, interesting and simple people. They tan, swim, play volleyball, basketball, drink, dance and then find someone to spend the night with. Excellent performances mark "The Savages," with Linney and Hoffman each navigating characters who could have become unlikable had they not been shaded with nuance.

Bill Gibron 06 Dec 2007

Walking precariously between real world gravitas and the far too isolated and idiosyncratic, The Savages is a wonderful premise undermined by some unnecessary pretense.

Richard Roeper 03 Dec 2007

One of those small, perfectly crafted, bittersweet family dramas it touches on so many truths it's almost painful to watch at times.

Has kind of a bleak interpretation of life, but a very realistic one, and I always appreciate realism no matter the circumstance. Philip Seymour Hoffman in particular is good in this. I can't help but notice how far apart Hoffman is from the rank and file of hollywood's narcissistic elite. He has his own truly subtle style that I have a feeling many cannot appreciate, but which is, I think, much more rewarding to see than the canned performances one usually sees from Tom Cruise and his ilk.

The latter half suffers from degenerative indie-itis, that epidemic syndrome whose main symptom is unwarranted interest in the ennui afflicting well-read urban misfits.
