Salma (2014)
After the accidental death of her taxi-driver husband, Salma decides to become master of her own life by taking over his taxi. She comes up against the Kafkaesque procedures of Tunisian bureaucracy and the offhandedness of the insurance industry, but refuses to let go and is not intimidated by anything. With quiet determination, she also faces the conservatism of her in-laws who, under the pretext of morality, continue to dictate the way she should behave. In order to create a better future for her daughter but also for herself, Salma is locked in a daily struggle with the world around her.

Historical drama depicting 1965 Selma to Montgomery civil rights marches. Many historians claim that the movie is not historically accurate, especially the role of the President Lyndon Johnson who is shown as an obstructionist to Dr. King's cause. In fact, President Johnson was persistently pushing voting rights legislation through Congress, and some historians even say that Selma was his idea. Putting historical inaccuracies aside, the movie is made very well. It is emotionally charged and grim. There were a few episodes that seemed a bit too long. Even though I didn't not see any *outstanding* roles that could compete for best actor or actress, performances are excellent across the board, and so is the casting. Directing of Ava DuVernay definitely deserves praise. This is her second movie, and after watching the first one, "In the Middle of Nowhere", I knew we would hear from her again. The choice of musical score is also very good. Overall, it is a very accomplished movie but not a masterpiece.

Like "Lincoln," written by Tony Kushner and directed by Steven Spielberg, DuVernay's Selma ushers us into the world of the backstage, back-room and back-scratching political process, dramatizing how the sausage was actually made.

This movie gave me goosebumps, made me cry and even made me laugh at points in spite of itself. It is the acting that really takes the cake in this instant classic.

A powerful film. Magnificent performances from all cast members and a diligent script delivered an exceptional, moving and poignant experience. The pacing was excellent and, in spite of knowing the history, the storyline remained compelling, with violent moments punctuated by the intimate and tense scenes of the underlying difficulties faced by King and his compatriots, giving a deep insight into the complexities of the era. A thoroughly considered and carefully crafted film. 9.

This is cinema, more rhetorical, spectacular, and stirring than cable-TV drama: again and again, DuVernay’s camera (Bradford Young did the cinematography) tracks behind characters as they march, or gentles toward them as they approach, receiving them with a friendly hand.
