One of those documentaries where a lot of fancy people who never met the guy use the word "must" a lot. Oh, well, he must have thought this, they say, waving their hands around. Oh, this must be why he did this. It's all kind of annoying, actually.

It feels overstuffed and overlong, getting bogged down as it does in the minutiae of certain segments of Salinger's life without conveying a big-picture sense of what his actual writing was like.

LOVE this doc that critics hate. Watched it last night. My heart broke all over again for everyone who had/has a Dad who didn't come back all the way from WWII. Now understand Holden Caufield in a whole new Billy Pilgrim way. And have a new understanding of why I was captivated by the Glass family when I read Salinger in the 60's. And why I am haunted by Esme. And why I must finish the novel I set aside when Elliott was diagnosed with his brain tumor.

Salinger does what so many documentaries and biopics either fail to do or decline to attempt; it speculates convincingly on the connective tissue between the life and the work of the subject.
