The era deserves far better than hipster nostalgia.

Rubble Kings is a documentary detailing New York gang activity in the late 60s and early 70s, which inspired the cult movie The Warriors. The movie features interviews with members of the gangs and details the history both positive and negative. Things I Liked: The Historical Influence. I found the subject interesting and it was interesting to see how it has shaped much of the culture later on after they were past their height and especially how the movie The Warriors was influenced by them. Things I Didn't Like: The Lack of Interest. Maybe this is just me but I found the narrative and characters very hard to follow and the subject doesn't hold your interest for very long. By the time this was over I was thanking the stars that I could move on with my life. Which is never how I want to leave a movie, Overall. Overall the documentary has enough interest to grab your attention but then it loses it very quickly after that. The subject isn't incredibly appealing and by the end you don't care about the documentary at all unfortunately.

Using Walter Hill's cult classic film "The Warriors" as a cultural touchstone, Shan Nicholson's documentary Rubble Kings recounts their stories in breathlessly paced, vivid fashion.

Had Nicholson taken advantage of Melendez and Suarez's seemingly easy-going nature, Rubble Kings might have been great. As it is, the film is a one-sided, but satisfying tribute to an alternatively terrifying and beguiling city that we can only revisit in movies.
