Rick (2003)

"Rigoletto" retold at Christmas time in Manhattan's corporate world. Rick, an executive at Image, is a jerk to a woman applying for a job. That evening, he's out for drinks with his much younger boss, Duke, and the same women is their waitress. Rick's continued rudeness leads to her getting fired. She puts a curse on him.

The intended black comedy is no more than a wan mix of over-the-top unpleasantness and obvious psychologizing.

If it weren't mildly surreal, this film could have been a disaster in the form of sly references to an opera. Instead, Handler's brutal dialogue and Clayton's theatric photography gives it a constant hook. It has some great performances from Pullman and the incomparable Dylan baker.

Intelligent, slightly artsy and completely engrossing up until the finish. I actually found myself on the edge of my seat, making this one of the finest rehashes I have ever seen.
