Red River (2009)

A haunting, tragic love story about the aftermath of the American War in Vietnam, and the long-term effect it had on ordinary people's lives. Set in a border town between China and Vietnam, it is a universal story that could be about any war, in any country.

This is possibly (likely, probably, certainly) my favorite western. Hawks' direction is masterfully relaxed as always, letting the talent of the actors shine through. John Wayne delivers his finest performance this side of The Searchers as a man so desperate and obsessed with succeeding that he is willing to sacrifice the lives of his friends and family in the process. Robert Ireland also has a terrific role here as Montgomery Clift's brash rival.

the plot could be a little slow, but montgomery and waynes talent isnt negosiable.

Essential western viewing material. John Ford reportedly said this was the first time that John Wayne had ever actually "acted" -- and it shows -- Wayne's portrayal of the amoral and isolted Tom Dunson is one of his finest roles.

A great achievement for the western genre and film in general. What makes it entertaining are the many cultural undertones that are hidden throughout. It is not the representativeness of the western but of the time in which the film was made that speaks loudest. The acting is superb from the two leads, mostly John Wayne in the role of Tom Dunson. Clift Montgomery thrives in the way he interacts with Wayne's character, but that alone. Hawks' direction intricately places and observes the complex relationship in the world it takes place, but speaks of a different time with different issues. Essentially, this film is a joy to watch and a great exercise for the active viewer.

Hawks goes epic and it still is a wonder today
