Real Boy (2016)

REAL BOY is the coming-of-age story of Bennett Wallace, a transgender teenager on a journey to find his voice-as a musician, a friend, a son, and a man. As he navigates the ups and downs of young adulthood, Bennett works to gain the love and support of his mother, who has deep misgivings about her child's transition. Along the way, he forges a powerful friendship with his idol, Joe Stevens, a celebrated transgender musician with his own demons to fight.

Sensitive and introspective...this is a remarkably honest coming-of-age story.

Intimate docu follows teen through gender transition.

This is not a complete story of a transgender individual, but is the story of his decision period for (and outcome of) transition surgery. It could have included more details about the peer response to his early years, but nonetheless is a good documentary of this decision period. A follow-on would be useful to explore the long term satisfaction of the decision from a physical and emotional standpoint. His music mentor Joe also deserves a more thorough coverage.

With two subjects who are remarkably self-aware yet both out of their depth in different ways, this beautifully balanced documentary is engaging throughout. It's full of sharp observations and full of heart.

I went thinking, oh boy, a friend taking me somewhere because I care about trans stuff. I walked away stunned. Loving portrait of transgender boy, coming of age, his mother, coming to terms, and a touching mentor relationship.
