In 1951, New York poet Elizabeth Bishop travels to Rio de Janeiro to visit Mary, a college friend. The shy Elizabeth is overwhelmed by Brazilian sensuality. She is the antithesis to Mary's dashing partner, architect Lota de Macedo Soares. Mary is jealous, but unconventional Lota is determined to have both women at all costs. This eternal triangle plays out against the backdrop of the military coup of 1964. Bishop's moving poems are at the core of a film which lushly illustrates a crucial phase in the life of this influential Pulitzer prize-winning poet.

The film never works out how to generate genuine dramatic fire from its material. There are convincing performances and decorative retro detail to admire, but the heart needs to beat just that bit faster – and it doesn’t manage that.

What could have been a run of the mill lesbian love story is elevated not just by the poetry of Elizabeth Bishop and the extraordinary architecture of Lota de Macedo Soares but by the underlying study of how alcoholism destroys interpersonal relationships. Elizabeth Bishop's geographic to Brazil is brilliantly depicted as a series of deeper and more destructive episodes of fear and self recrimination that leave her in an alcoholic stupor...unable to engage on anything but a superficial level with either her friend Mary or with her charming, passionate, caring lover. This movie should be seen not for its love story between Elizabeth and Lota but to witness the insidious effects of alcoholism on what could have been and should have been one of the great love stories between two gifted women. Also, I gave it four stars not just because of the story and the acting but because of the breathtaking beauty of Brazil which is the real co-star of this film.

adored it tremendously, warts and all. moving, beautiful, oh so sad. hard not to be mesmerised by gloria pires's "lota". "the art of losing isn't hard to master." a most pleasurable ache.
