In 1951, New York poet Elizabeth Bishop travels to Rio de Janeiro to visit Mary, a college friend. The shy Elizabeth is overwhelmed by Brazilian sensuality. She is the antithesis to Mary's dashing partner, architect Lota de Macedo Soares. Mary is jealous, but unconventional Lota is determined to have both women at all costs. This eternal triangle plays out against the backdrop of the military coup of 1964. Bishop's moving poems are at the core of a film which lushly illustrates a crucial phase in the life of this influential Pulitzer prize-winning poet.

Baretto's movie, which is sensual and emotionally intense, benefits from [its] traditional approach and I don't think audiences who love to revel in this kind of movie will mind it, either.

What could have been a run of the mill lesbian love story is elevated not just by the poetry of Elizabeth Bishop and the extraordinary architecture of Lota de Macedo Soares but by the underlying study of how alcoholism destroys interpersonal relationships. Elizabeth Bishop's geographic to Brazil is brilliantly depicted as a series of deeper and more destructive episodes of fear and self recrimination that leave her in an alcoholic stupor...unable to engage on anything but a superficial level with either her friend Mary or with her charming, passionate, caring lover. This movie should be seen not for its love story between Elizabeth and Lota but to witness the insidious effects of alcoholism on what could have been and should have been one of the great love stories between two gifted women. Also, I gave it four stars not just because of the story and the acting but because of the breathtaking beauty of Brazil which is the real co-star of this film.

A melancholy love story of two people who wanted the same yet different things. They ask each other to give things they couldn't. One is ask to live a life that involves allowing her and an ex lover to start a family together as a struggling alcoholic you can see the train wreck waiting to happen. The other needs alcoholic needs a feeling of complete love she can never seem to get with the ex lover in the picture she goes on to allow the two to finally settle together and at which point the other goes mad without her... the ex lover continues to hold them apart... and in the end it ultimately leads to their demise... a sad story of one who was reaching for the moon having your cake and eating it too sometimes just simply gives us a tummy ache...I enjoyed this story although I knew it couldn't end well with an ex love in the picture I had hoped it would however, the story was true to life...we don't always get what we hope for...
