A strongly conventional film that ends up sinking into irreparable lethargy. [Full review in Spanish]

This movie is about the life of archaeologist Gertrude Bell who was a strong, intelligent and independent woman. She acquired exceptional skills in diplomacy for which she became famous. In the movie however, the central theme are Gertrude's troubled relationships with men that are likely not historically accurate. She twice falls for a quite mentally unstable man and the problems that develop from these relationships build the main plot. Her diplomatic skills are more of a sub-plot. If Gertrude Bell would have been a man the movie would have build around diplomatic interactions and would have made her intelligence and her strength the central theme. Unfortunately, because she is a woman these aspects are almost completely missing. However, Nicole Kidman is a great actor and the scenery is stunning, so I give 3 stars.

This may be Werner Herzog's most conventional film, but its mostly untold true story knows what it means for a woman to choose a life of adventure and intellect.

QUEEN OF THE DESSERT - Nicole Kidman plays Gertrude Bell, a British woman scholar ahead of her time. The movie is based on the true story of Bell (1856-1926) who was not satisfied to live the domestic life of most females of the day. She was Oxford educated and spoke 6 languages. Bell traveled the world, particularly the middle east, as an adventurer, archaeologist, poet, spy & politician. I found the story of her relationships with men in power, from Churchill to King Faisel to Lawrence of Arabia, most fascinating. She was unique, she was driven, she persisted.
