Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer (2013)

In the winter of 2011, after a controversial election, Vladimir Putin was reinstalled as president of Russia. In response, hundreds of thousands of citizens rose up all over the country to challenge the legitimacy of Putin's rule. Among them were a group of young, radical-feminist punk rockers, better known as Pussy Riot. Wearing colored balaclavas, tights, and summer dresses, they entered Moscow's most venerated cathedral and dared to sing "Mother Mary, Banish Putin!" Now they have become victims of a "show" trial.

Peter Bradshaw 03 Jul 2013

This documentary by Mike Lerner and Maxim Pozdorovkin argues that Pussy Riot suffered an old-fashioned Soviet show trial, and what emerges is the effrontery and hypocrisy of Putin's attempt to associate these three young women with the Bolsheviks' suppression of religion.

Simon Kinnear 02 Jul 2013

While sympathetic to their plight, the directors prove alert to the story’s wider impact, speaking to proud parents and outraged opponents alike.

Matthew Turner 03 Jul 2013

A thoroughly engaging and enlightening documentary, which gets up-close-and-personal with the three female Pussy Riot members that were sent to jail for a satirical performance in a Moscow cathedral.

Mark Olsen 29 May 2013

Even if you may not be putting a Pussy Riot song on your next playlist, there is something so of-the-moment and exciting about the group that Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer feels important, if not fully complete.

A frightening look at how some countries continue to refuse freedom of speech. Although, at times I was unsure whether the girls of Pussy Riot actually believe their own politics or they simply enjoy being antagonists. Regardless, their treatment is royally effed up.
