Punished (2011)

Real estate tycoon Wong Ho-Chiu (Anthony Wong Chau-Sang) suffers great pain when his daughter Daisy (Janice Man) is kidnapped and killed. Wong Ho-Chiu turns to his trusted bodyguard Chor (Richie Ren) to seek out the perpetrators and exact revenge. Wong Ho-Chiu goes one step further and orders Chor to videotape each of their executions. Once Chor tracks down the final perpetrator Wong Ho-Chiu decides to kill that person himself.

As far as Hong Kong crime thrillers go, Wing-cheong Law is no stranger. Therefore, it is of no surprise that Punished is one solid production.Strolling along at a somewhat leisurely pace, Punished avoids disappointment with its kidnapping/revenge storyline. Pieced together with multiple subplots, there is enough to occupy 90 minutes of screen time.The plot has all the makings of an action-oriented picture, but this film avoids that, in turn electing to focus on and build characters. That isn't to say that the action and violence are completely absent; just limited in quantity when looking at things as a whole.Thanks to the fatherhood theme, Anthony Wong ends up as a suitable choice for the principal character. With a supporting role that holds a lot of interest, Richie Ren stands out just as much as Wong. Janice Man, Maggie Cheung, and Candy Lo successfully make up the integral female cast of characters.Overall, Punished stays true to its title and is a recommendable thriller out of Hong Kong.

The best way to describe this movie, is to imagine this movie as an onion. It's really something simple, but what is interesting is the layers of complexity and suspense that will stings. The storyline is a very typical crime thriller movie, which to most is predictable and average. Many might not enjoy the movie as it definately is not some pow-wow original movie, but what impress me is the level of detailing of the story which really boils down to lots of powerful acting, emotions, character development as well as truth/factual details. It is to no surprise that Anthony Wong and Richie Ren manage to establish and wow the crowd with their acting, since both done this sort of character many times before. But what seems to interest me are the ladies. It's really interesting to see how Maggie and Candy both put up a stunning performance which really spills no beans about what's to come next. I'm torn apart as on one side, I really enjoy the level of details to the movie and the character development while the flat and shallow storyline really kills.

Quite enjoyed this thriller with the fantastic Anthony Wong. Very polished and gripping enough, the film is well acted with some tense action scenes. Worth watching!
