This was an interesting film. Kinda strange, but at the same time, introspective. I wasn't crazy about the puppetized Greek tragedies, as much as the actual character's stories.

Absolutely remarkable. I wasnt sure how the premise would work out, but comparison to euripidean drama is a really effective device, the puppetry is fantastically emotive and descriptive. And I wasn't expecting it to describe the lives of four such remarkable individuals. A bullied amateur martial artist. An abused bankrobbing ubermensch. A homosexual fervently fighting himself through his faith. And a liberal, driven to terrorism, forced to face the realities of what he became. And so forth. See it if you can.

[font=Century Gothic]By taking a page out of Errol Morris' playbook, with the documentary "Protagonist," Jessica Yu has made a mildly successful and occasionally perplexing film(sorry, but I don't get the whole Greek puppets thing...) with four ordinary men, Mark Pierpont, Hans-Joachim Klein, Joe Loya and Mark Salzman testifying about troubled times in their lives.(Of the four, Klein is the most notorious of the four due to his involvement with terrorists in West Germany in the 1970's including the infamous Carlos the Jackal. For this reason, he is also not the most fortcoming, sounding a little naive in fact. Remember, if somebody ever hands you a loaded gun, playtime is over.) What she is after is an exploration of masculinity as all the men included here were missing something from their lives when they were younger, be it a parent's love or a cause, and were lured by the siren song of fanaticism.[/font]

Thought-provoking, moving and attention-grabbing all the way through. Jessica Yu's creative concept is one of the most unique documentary ideas ever. Imagine Joy Luck Club, but for men, and men who are not fictional characters. You wouldn't think that a terrorist, bank robber, ex-ex-gay and a kung-fu guy could have much in common, but what Yu exposes is that we are more alike as human beings than we realize. I wasn't a very big fan of some of the interspersed Greek vignettes (though it does allow for the puppetry to work), because I felt that the interlaced storylines of the four men were compelling enough without the fluff. Still, "Protagonist" is precisely that kind of film that is hard to describe in a good way.
