PRIMO was adapted by Antony Sher from Primo Levi's monumental account of his year spent in Auschwitz, IF THIS IS A MAN. When it opened in September 2004 at the National Theatre PRIMO was instantly recognised as a major theatrical event. A work of astounding dramatic power it sheds a light on one of the darkest episodes in human history. Antony Sher's towering performance is as controlled as Primo Levi s own lucid prose. Beautifully directed by Richard Wilson and presented in Hildegard Bechtler's magnificent, symbolist set.

Powerful monologue of Primo Levi's descriptions of life in Auschwitz. A haunting and tragic piece of theatre transposed onto film - Anthony Sher's performance is almost mesmerising, and beautiful in a terrible way.

Don't let that this is a one man play, scare you out of watching it. You will forget about that fact after you've had it on for two minutes. This was heartbreaking and very interesting also. Whether you're interested in the history or not, I think this would still be a good watch for you if you care about people at all.

Impressively portrayed by Anthony Sher, this film has one man talking in empty rooms. Sounds interesting? Well, it is, because the story is so terrible and impressive. Indeed, the film keeps one's interest throught the entire movie. Even so, it could have been a longer film, because like the way it was shown on tv it seemed to lack something, compressed somehow. But despite that small criticism, I liked this movie. It is a reminder of what is always possible. Recommended to see or read as a book. Actually big part of the film's effect comes from the horrible facts that are revealed to the audience, the bits of philosophical realizations and the splendid acting. They showed this movie on Finnish television. note: It's not a 1h 50min film, as Flixster up there suggests, but actually just 1h 20 min..
