Primal (2010)

Anja and five friends join anthroplogy student, Dace, on a journey to study a remote, ancient rock painting. Their excitement vanishes when Mel becomes delirious after skinny-dipping in the waterhole. Feverish, bleeding, confused, she physically and mentally regresses to a vicious predatory state. Mel has gone primal. Mel's lover and friends realise they are the prey as she savagely hunts them down. Before they can escape another one of them starts to regress, posing a hideous choice; kill their friends or be killed by them. Their only hope of survival is through a cave, where Anja learns too late the meaning of the ancient rock art they came to study.

Was actually quite good considering it was part The Ruins, part Demons and a few parts from other horror movies all rolled into one. Nothing new story wise but for a little low budget Australian movie very enjoyable.

A decent enough Aussie horror. The movie is about a group of young people who go camping only to have one of them go swimming and getting leeches on her. After that she becomes infected and starts getting sharp teeth and attacking others. Also there's a cave that harbours an unknown creature. Sharp dialogue, believable characters and some pretty nifty visual and makeup effects make this an entertaining and undemanding, often quite subversive time waster. It's not going to win any awards but that's never the intention with a something like this. At a brisk 84 minutes it doesn't hang around long enough to become self indulgent or boring and just when you think you know where it's going the screenwriter throws another curve-ball your way. Definitely not for the squeamish but a must for anyone else who isn't fussed by cheap effects and just wants a satisfactory thrill.

Unless you feel the need to be reminded how good "The Descent" was, skip this Australian mishmash of forgettable CG effects.

2 stars for the jumpy scenes. The story was lacking and confusing. I mean tentacles? really? Lighting's we're off and the special effects is really bad.
