Powder Room (2013)

This comedy follows Sam, as her life is turned upside down on a big night out. When reunited with her old college friends, Sam is forced to re-evaluate her life and constructs an elaborate façade in order to convince herself and her friends that she has it all. But once her dysfunctional yet devoted trio of best mates intervene, her carefully crafted charade begins to crumble amidst the shots, cigarettes, ciders and toilet transgressions. Faced with some very harsh realities, Sam must struggle to remain true to herself and reassess exactly what she wants from life.

Good for what it is definitely directed at women more than men and the acting is not great however kept me entertained enough to finish

Powder Room harnesses some refreshing female comedic talent, all witnessed by the wise toilet attendant (newcomer Johnnie Fiori) who ends the night on a high, soulful note - much like any Saturday night sing-song in the loo when inhibitions crumble.

A strange little film that grows on you as it goes on. It retains some elements of the original stage play but it contains a few inventive elements which save it from just becoming a play on film. Sheridan Smith is great with some solid supporting performances from the rest of the cast.

The film's observations on women's rivalries and friendship aren't particularly eye opening and there's not much in the way of a plot, but first-time director MJ Delaney gives the action a vibrant energy that's matched by her appealing cast.

A frank and fitfully funny look at female friendship
