This is a really intriguing ghost/love story.

wonderful cinematography, overbearing tiomkin score, silly melodrama with supernatural elements that requires huge suspension of disbelief, then works like gangbusters. soo selznick...

A great oldie but goodie that I think most people that like old movies have not come across.

didnt end up being what i thought it was, its actually a lil creepy joe cotten falling for a kid and then watching her grow up, the whole logic of who/what jennie is is convoluted and confusing, and i didnt really respond to her, the ending is rushed too, also there was some pretty subpar editing and sound mixing, especially for an A movie, having said all that, most of the acting is good, and there are some well written exchanges, i wish there was more of the irish friend, some good cinematography too

A wonderfully overwrought ethereal love story which transcends time and space, William Dieterle has crafted an eerie fairytale. The quickly aging Jennie defies logic, physics and religion, and as their relationship progresses the tone becomes eerie and oddly spiritual. The last 20 minutes is, all at once, supernatural (with it's green tinted storm sequence) and emotional. The ending, too, seems to presage Andrei Rublev with a brief color sequence. There's certainly nothing else out there quite like it. No wonder Buñuel was a fan.
