Ponette (1996)

After losing her mother in a car accident that leaves her with a broken arm, 4-year-old Ponette struggles with anguish and fear. Left by her father with a caring aunt and her children, Ponette grieves, secretly hoping her mother will somehow come back. Confused by the religious explanations provided by adults, and challenged by the cruel taunts of a few children at school, little Ponette must make her way through her emotional turmoil.

Beautiful film, even if you despise independent flicks

The best acting I've ever seen was done in this movie by a 3 year old girl. Its a beautiful movie about grieving from a young childs point of view. The acting is so real, and heartbreaking. But there are these delightful moments too. Be warned though, it moves slowly, and is more introspective than entertaining. Also, the whole thing is in French w/ subtitles.

A truly touching movie with brilliant acting by some of the most talented young actors I've ever seen. At the time this French film was produced, its protagonist was played by a 4-year old actress who carries this film on her small shoulders and carries it extremely well and better than most adult actors can only dream of carrying a film. The story is of an extremely sad nature and is very telling of how amazing these tiny thespians really are. To be able to act in a drama that deals with loss and tragedy and demands them to express a great amount of emotion not only showcases talent, but sucks you into the lives of these characters and makes you feel what they feel. By empathizing with a little thing like Ponette, you really feel for her and root for her until the very end. NOTE: French with English subtitles.

Oh my this was spectacular. That child just tore my heart apart and I really felt for her. The child can act. I loved also how innocent this film was, and not only can the main child act, but the other children can as well. They're little notions and beliefs and how they believed certain things were so adorable, so innocent, and so honest. I would definitely recommend this film. It seemed so real.
