At Evergreen Primary School in Wuhan, China, a Grade 3 class learns what democracy is when an election for class monitor is being held. Three children are chosen by the teacher as candidates and they have a few days to campaign and convince their classmates to vote for them. The little candidates are seen at school and at home, where their parents do their best to make sure their child will win the election.

While the concept is sociologically interesting, the film based on this first experiment in deomcracy is utterly forgettable.

Enjoyable to watch, and interesting. I think that more active interviewing or engagement by the filmmakers would have been enlightening- some interesting moments occurred when the kids were talking to the camera. One afterthought: some scenes which prompted an "only in China" remark were, after some reflection, not that dissimilar to what probably happens in super-competitive homes in my home (the US) or, I imagine, in many other developed countries.

This is the best documentary I've seen to date - not in terms of importance or influence of the subject, but in terms of its honesty and spontaneity. It's a short docu about a trio of third-graders who are campaigning to become Class Monitor. For their age, they definitely displayed a whole lot of the fundamentals of politics, democracy and campaigning. I was chuckling most of the time, just because the 3 candidates were very endearing - especially Cheng Cheng who was very ambitious and was really out to get the position. But at the same time, I nodded once in a while whenever I realized how the dynamics in that little 3rd grade classroom actually plays out in politics in the outside world. The debate was hilarious - very mundane and childlike, yes, but listen and observe more closely and you'll see that this is Debating 101. You can get a lot of tips right there. I have only good things to say about this film. DEFINITELY A MUST-SEE. :D FIVE STARS!

Democracy is alive and well in China....well in a primary school that is as 3 eight year olds go head to head in an election to be class monitor. It might not mean much to us but it doesn't stop the parents getting involved. Just like politics in real life the candidates use dirty tactics with one fat loudmouth bullying for votes which backfires! I was rooting for the little girl as she was the underdog. The result of the election will hardly surprise you when one of them pulls a swerve just before voting. I found this to be a fascinating documentary as an insight into another culture.

Alright, I get the point about democracy coming to China (albeit in a 3rd grade classroom), but this film was pretty lame. None of the kids are really appealing and they're all ruthless in their own way, but who cares? I didn't. I also think it's especially lame having the video's cover showing the final tallied votes for each candidate. I wish I noticed it before wasting my time with this.
