At Evergreen Primary School in Wuhan, China, a Grade 3 class learns what democracy is when an election for class monitor is being held. Three children are chosen by the teacher as candidates and they have a few days to campaign and convince their classmates to vote for them. The little candidates are seen at school and at home, where their parents do their best to make sure their child will win the election.

Democracy with Chinese characteristics, indeed :)

Enjoyable to watch, and interesting. I think that more active interviewing or engagement by the filmmakers would have been enlightening- some interesting moments occurred when the kids were talking to the camera. One afterthought: some scenes which prompted an "only in China" remark were, after some reflection, not that dissimilar to what probably happens in super-competitive homes in my home (the US) or, I imagine, in many other developed countries.

One of the best films yet to capture the spirit of daily life in China. It's both funny and sad, as the drama of each of the three candidates for class monitor unfolds. The kids are all stars! Better than many fictional dramas.
