Phil Ochs: There But for Fortune (2011)
From civil rights to the anti-war movement to the struggles of workers, folksinger Phil Ochs wrote topical songs that engaged his audiences in the issues of the 1960s and 70s. In this biographical documentary, veteran director Kenneth Bowser shows how Phil's music and his fascinating life story and eventual decline into depression and suicide were intertwined with the history-making events that defined a generation. Even as his contemporaries moved into folk-rock and pop music, Phil followed his own vision, challenging himself and his listeners. Not one to pull punches, Ochs never achieved the commercial success he desperately desired. But his music remains relevant, reaching new audiences in a generation that finds his themes all too familiar.

Fantastic, long-overdue documentary about the life and music of Phil Ochs, one of the greatest voices and songwriters of the 60's folk music scene, and the last real American troubadour. Bowser combines excellent rarely-seen archival footage of Phil's performances and interviews with vivid and frank recollections from friends, fans, colleagues, and family members to paint the clearest picture of the artist seen since even before his death. Phil's words are as true now as they were fifty years ago, and his conviction no less inspiring.

Good 60's (US) history review and interesting revelation of one side of Bob Dylan's personality.

More than just a biopic of the famed troubadour, Phil Ochs: There But for Fortune is also a brief, brisk, brilliant history of social turmoil in America in the '60s.

"Changes" is on my all-time top ten list of folk songs; so why don't I feel guilty about not liking this film? Is it because we could plug in a dozen different names for Phil Ochs and end up with the same movie? Is it because boyish charm wears thin all too quickly? Or is it because the truth is finally revealed with the release of Phil's seventh and final studio album, "Greatest Hits" (1970) - which, contrary to its title, offers ten tracks of new material, a gold lamé suit and an abundance of self-pity? Are we attracted to the music because of the politics - or, are we attracted to the politics because of the music? I will always settle on the latter; sorry Phil, sorry Pete - think "one-hit-wonder".

This film, which shows Ochs' life -- flaws and all -- offers up a history lesson to those who are not that familiar with his musical work and societal contributions, and for Phil Ochs it provides some overdue recognition.
