Persistence of Vision (2012)

It was to be the greatest animated film of all time. Not just an eye-opener, but a game-changer. Richard Williams demanded nothing less, investing nearly three decades into his movie masterpiece. From as early as 1964 he ploughed most of the profits right back into his pet project, a feature inspired by the Arabian Nights and provisionally known as Mullah Nasruddin. He assembled a team of inspired young artists—and brought in the best Hollywood craftsmen to teach them—and devised what would be the most elaborate, kaleidoscopic, mind-boggling visual sequences ever committed to celluloid. Years passed. Potential financiers came and went. Work continued. But it was only after Roger Rabbit that Williams had a studio budget to corroborate the munificence of his imagination.

Schreck has crafted a moving tribute to Richard Williams's artistic ambition, and at the same time celebrates the melancholy beauty of impossible dreams.

It had been entirely too long since I'd seen Richard Williams animation on a big screen. Since Roger Rabbit, in fact, and before that you've got to go back to the Raggedy Ann & Andy movie. That alone would've made me give this five stars, because not five *minutes* in, and possibly not even five seconds, my mouth had fallen open in awe. That it is also a heartbreaking, genuinely tragic tale of failure, not to launch but to *land*, is the bitter with the sweet.

It's only a must if you're a die-hard fan of animation or cinema history. It still feels like there's a better version of this story waiting to be told.

Sometimes it feels like you're rattling around in the fever-dreaming brain of the animator. It's glorious.
