Parinda (1989)

Brothers Kishan and Karan grow up in Bombay. Karan soon leaves to study in America while Kishan enters into a life of crime, falling under the sway of Anna Seth, a drug lord. When Karan returns to Bombay, Kishan intends to keep him as far away from his criminal life as possible, but things don't go as planned.

I'm pretty sure this was released here in 1987! It was a mindblowing film then so I thought I'd give it another watch. It's just as brilliant still and hasn't lost any of it's impact. Nana Patekar gives his best performance in a commercial film. Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff are both at their peak, and it's probably the best film this pair made. The style of the film was a first for its time and has been the inspiration for lots of films that have come after. SUPERB.

A fast paced movie..with a great story and great acting..one of the best of recent Hindi cinema...a must watch..also a great soundtrack

The first ever realistic film about gangs in Bombay (now Mumbai). Kishen (Jackie Shroff) works as the muscle for gangster Ana (Nana Patekar). When Kishen's younger brother Karan (Anil Kapoor) arrives back from the States, Kishen finds it hard to hide the truth about his life. Matters get worse as Karan's best friend Inspector Prakash is assassinated by Ana's gang. Eventually forcing both brothers against one another. This is a very realistic and intense portrayal of crime and inner city life in India's underbelly. All the cast does an amazing job and Vidhu Vinod Chopra does a wonderful job as director. A masterpiece of Indian cinema.

this one is an Icon for many: excels at all levels: script, cinematography, character sketches, acting, plot reconstruction, dialogues, songs etc.. V.V.C rocks!
