Paradise (2011)

Marianna returns to Greece on a whim to surprise her boyfriend, secretly plotting to stay with him forever, while Nikos is using the carnival as an excuse to confess his love to his unsuspecting boss. Eugenia hesitates to tell her daughter about her secret romance with the much younger carnival crew leader, while Ilias has no qualms about begging his estranged wife to come home. Four couples, each one desperately trying to either rescue or escape their relationship, lose themselves in the intoxicating atmosphere of the carnival before they finally reveal their true colors, hidden behind the masks.

...it's an insipid confection of cloying hopefulness, bubblegum teen spirit and self-reflexive clever quips.

I have become a big fan of Russell Brand over the years. Whilst this wasn't his best piece of work by any stretch of the imagination, it was still an enjoyable watch. This is the first film that I have seen Julianne Hough in. If this is an indication than she has a bright future ahead. Whilst the film's script was slightly constricted, one could tell that she has a diverse acting ability. I was amazed to see how pretty she looks generally as she transforms herself into a simpleton in this one perfectly.

The film smartly avoids the sort of cynical hijinks that characterize the majority of Vegas-set flicks, though it can't come up with anything more compelling to place in its stead.

A tiresomely sarcastic maturation adventure, in which actors like Holly Hunter and Octavia Spencer renege on their goodwill.

I wanted to like this, but in the end it was just too talky and preachy for me. It had a few really good scenes, and one or two really bad scenes, which just turn it into a really average movie. I did love Russell Brand, though, as usual. 6/10, just for him.
