Orphans of the Storm (1921)

France, on the eve of the French Revolution. Henriette and Louise have been raised together as sisters. When the plague that takes their parents' lives causes Louise's blindness, they decide to travel to Paris in search of a cure, but they separate when a lustful aristocrat crosses their path.

"Orphans of the Strom" is more the same D.W. Griffith fare - lofty morality preached in the form of a longer-than-necessary but nonetheless ambitious silent film epic. The film follows the tale of two sisters who are lost in the "storm" that is the French revolution - heartfelt performances by the Gish sisters, Lillian and Dorathy. The set and costume designs are impeccable, however the writing and cinematography are second-rate when compared with earlier works, especially Intolerance. Not Griffith's greatest, but one of Lillian Gish's.

Griffith is just a master of visual storytelling. This film flows so well, alternating moments of tension with moments of excitement with moments of pathos and so on. The last 45 minutes or so are a frenetic mix of all these elements, bringing the film to a satisfying, if not unexpected, close. Lillian Gish is especially good in the latter portions of the film, while Griffith is able to bring a sense of intimacy in spite of the revolutionary context.

Another Griffith film starring Lillian Gish, this time as an orphan who vows to care for her blind sister. A more conventional film used as means to help pay the bills for past box office disasters.
