Orphans of the Storm (1921)

France, on the eve of the French Revolution. Henriette and Louise have been raised together as sisters. When the plague that takes their parents' lives causes Louise's blindness, they decide to travel to Paris in search of a cure, but they separate when a lustful aristocrat crosses their path.

Excellent silent film, a very sweet drama with superb performances from real life sisters Dorothy and Lillian Gish. Amazingly done, very touching. Well directed. A piece of cinematic history.

On pure enjoyment factor this has to be Griffith's best, maybe not technically the best but more enjoyable than all the rest (with Way Down East being about even). The story is compelling as we watch the two sisters perils unfold and believe it or not but the guillotine scene kept my heart racing (so I guess you could say it is the earliest adrenaline pumping movie as well). The French Revolution scenes seemed a bit excessive with the celebrating and could have been cut down quite a bit to make the movie shorter, but all in all I actually really enjoyed Orphans of the Storm.

D. W. Griffith chooses the French Revolution for this one, making a salient point about not mistaking fanatics as leaders. But we went ahead and elected our own version of Robespierre anyway.

Sprawling epic tale of two sisters during the time of the revolutions in France. In many ways this film rivals the 1939 epic Gone With the Wind: A long film which takes place over several years, kindness in the face of adversity, the passing of established society, and girls becoming women by trials of all sort. Not to mention the lavish costumes, sets, and well weaved story-lines. Based on a mid 19th century French play, this was the fifth adaption to the silent screen - and likely the best. I just wish the doctor had had a larger part in the midst of the maelstrom. There is an intermission about 2/3 of the way into the film, so it could be watched in segments.
