Seems calculated to shock, but what’s most disquieting about Nymph()maniac is how funny, tender, thoughtful, and truthful it is, even as it pushes into genuinely seamy aspects of onscreen sexuality. Obnoxious he may be, but von Trier knows how to burrow into our ids.

Very good movie, really good direction. Controversial by its content and topic, nevertheless, really well developed, not basing its greatness in sex, yes in human nature and emotions.

But whereas female sexuality was borderline vampiric in Antichrist, this time we're in more ambiguous, contextually richer terrain, where desire is complicated not only by love, but also by a deep need for self-determination, and pride.

I was completely prepared to rip this movie a new hole ala my lambasting of "Blue is the warmest color," (see my review for that film) "Nymphomaniac" being the latest entry in the same type of European dogma-style attempt to make a artistically valid pornographic movie but the movie (Nymphomaniac) was so beyond the pale of bad I can't summon anything even critical to say about it. It really is so bad it doesn't even deserve a juvenile thrashing. Thoughts of any sort are difficult to formulate around this film. It almost makes that travesty "Blue is the warmest color" look like competent film making. I will say this though: critics of Blue often accused the director of that film, Abdellatif Kechiche of making a movie about a lesbian relationship while having no knowledge of lesbian sex. After watching Nymphomaniac Lars Von Trier appears to have no knowledge of heterosexual sex.

Fairly bad movie... The unrealistic sexual theme is irritating, if not unbearable. The whole film through, you just can't believe the older guy can be interested in the tale of the highly unsympathetic nympho he rescued. It gets even worse at the end, when an allegory is made between polyphonic voices and sexual life. From that moment I just had to laughed, at last. I'm giving a 4 cause the acting is actually good enough (Shia Laboeuf, Uma Thurman), but nonetheless this is the Lars Von Trier movie you need to avoid at any cost. (See Melancholia...
