Nora (2000)

In 1904, in Dublin, James Joyce chats up Nora Barnacle, a hotel maid recently come from Galway. She enchants him with her frank, direct and uninhibited manner, and before long, he's convinced her to come with him to Trieste, where he has a job with Berlitz. Over time, Nora pulls him through phobias, tolerates his drinking, takes in his brother Stan, and bests Joyce at 'the writin' game' to bring him back to Italy from Dublin where he's gone to open a cinema. But his sexual jealousy threatens the relationship and sends her back to Galway with the children. Is there any way to tame Jim's green-eyed monster? And, will the lad ever get his stories published?

Boarderline smut... I think someone tripped across some letters that Joyce wrote his wife and decided they'd make a movie. Normally I don't have issue with graphic love/sex scenes but this was just aweful. There's very little dialogue in the movie and what is there is pretty poor. I'm a Ewan fan but this is just crap.

Despite what any one says, this is an amazing period romance that tells the true story of the Irish novelist James Joyce and Susan Lynch plays his wife and lover, Susan Barnacle. They fall in love and they have their difficulties but they still stay married through it all. Truly an amazing film.

The story (well told in movie time and movie fashion) of author James Joyce and his passionate love for Nora. Neither would be easy to love, but they made it through the storms that would have sent weaker hearts runing.

As a James Joyce fan, I really liked the film. The acting was great. It was interesting to see Joyce through a focus on his complicated relationship with Nora. I learned about how his regular life was like and how difficult it was to leave Ireland and to deal with his obsessive jealousy and drinking. Opened issues for thought about artists' lives.
