I didn't go into this movie a huge Nas fan by any means. I liked the rapper and remember liking a couple of his songs back in the day but that's where it ended. I came out of this film not only a true Nas fan, but also completely inspired by his story. Coming from a neighborhood that could've crushed him, he beat the odds and created one of the most important hip hop albums ever made. This documentary will make you want to look at what you have and that you can create something greater than yourself and your surroundings. Delving into what it means to be a black man in America, Time is Illmatic is not just a story about a rapper but about how to become something in a world that thinks you are nothing.

The final third is a crush of genius, with several Nas tracks (including his lovely, Michael Jackson-sampling “It Ain’t Hard to Tell”) receiving the kind of detailed breakdowns rare in pop-artist conversations.

The only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars is because I already knew all this and I was hoping for footage and info that true hip hop heads didn't already know, or should know. But it is very well done and the music is an absolute classic from the best hip hop album ever made, and that is coming from Wu brother #1.
