Emily Delahunty is an eccentric British romance novelist who lives in Umbria in central Italy. One day while travelling, the train she is on is bombed by terrorists. After she wakes up in a hospital, she invites three of the other survivors of the disaster to stay at her Italian villa for recuperation. Of these are The General, a retired British Army veteran, Werner, a young German man, and Aimee, a young American girl who has now become mute after her parents were both killed in the explosion.

Interesting film, but perhaps a bit slow at times.

Starring Dame Maggie Smith, dear old Ronnie Barker (in his last film before he died), noted English comedian Timothy Spall, and Giancarlo Giannini (looking very much like an Italian Ian Turpey), this gentle, modest, and moving film about grace and redemption is more than just a nice time-passer. Beautiful cinematography and sympathetic performances combine to tell a simple tale in direct, compassionate, and humourous style.

Somewhat slow but picturesque, Smith plays her character over the top making the film surprisingly funny.

Maggie deserved the Emmy she won for this role. It is an amazing film. I love the way Maggie was portrayed different than her normal roles in the movie.

I absolutely loved this movie!!! I loved the great touch of humor and the story~~
