Emily Delahunty is an eccentric British romance novelist who lives in Umbria in central Italy. One day while travelling, the train she is on is bombed by terrorists. After she wakes up in a hospital, she invites three of the other survivors of the disaster to stay at her Italian villa for recuperation. Of these are The General, a retired British Army veteran, Werner, a young German man, and Aimee, a young American girl who has now become mute after her parents were both killed in the explosion.

Maggie deserved the Emmy she won for this role. It is an amazing film. I love the way Maggie was portrayed different than her normal roles in the movie.

It is, of course, a tribute to Dame Maggie that we end up rooting for Emily's version of the world rather than our own, and that we would rather live in Italy.

Something about this film was just a tad off for this viewer. Maggie Smith as Mrs. Delahunty is faultless, but the story was maybe a little too pat, the treatment a little too sugary, the ending a little too deus ex machina. One expects a little more from a film produced by HBO. This seemed more suited to Hallmark. Beautiful cinematography, solid pacing, a decent cast, but still something was missing to make this truly enjoyable. I liked it, I just didn't love it.

HBO sometimes forces a movie on to you. This is one. It is really not that bad and will keep your attention somewhat if your at all interested. The cities and landscapes are very nice set in Italy obviously. It goes slowly sometimes and could have developed alot better in the end half though.
