Multiple Sarcasms (2010)

Gabriel is a man who on the surface has it all-successful professional life as an architect, a beautiful wife, Annie, and a devoted young daughter, Elizabeth. But slowly it dawns on him that he is not really happy. Gabriel decides that he wants to write a play about the sorry state of his life. He quits his job, gets a pushy literary agent friend to represent him and starts writing. Although his marriage ends in a divorce, the play is success and although his life is different than it was, he is happier.

A vanity production by Branch, previously a studio branding consultant, it's the kind of odious, self-validating wish fulfillment that actually makes you appreciate the more generous self-absorption of Henry Jaglom films.

The film was so so. It needed a rewrite. It seemed at times that it wasn't balanced. The pacing was off. On the positive the film does have some great scenes in it. Timothy Hutton is ok as the lead, but I was expecting better from him. Mira Sorvino steals the film. She is great in every scene of the film. Stockard Channing, Dana Delany, and Mario Van Peebles provide solid supporting work here. It was great seeing Joan Jett in the film. The film is worth checking out for Mira Sorvino's performance.

Witty and urbane people of all ages walk through the melodramatic paces and no matter how much they drink, their bottles are always full. Whine and meander with them, and stand in line with others who like this movie, defined as the crowd that excuses themselves to the bathroom to fart, but orgasm to their own smell. A lot of high priced talent working a high school play script, there is nothing to distinguish it from hundreds of other existential drone films that wrap up so nice and neatly that one could swear it was made by Touchstone.

The cast is uniformly appealing in out-of-left-field ways, but writer-director Brooks Branch lets the story amble lazily, which -- like Gabriel and almost every character like him you've ever seen -- gets a little tiring.
