Mrs. Dalloway (1997)

Clarissa Dalloway looks back on her youth as she readies for a gathering at her house. The wife of a legislator and a doyenne of London's upper-crust party scene, Clarissa finds that the plight of ailing war veteran Septimus Warren Smith reminds her of a past romance with Peter Walsh. In flashbacks, young Clarissa explores her possibilities with Peter.

Fantastic dramatisation of a very difficult Virginia Woolf Book. Vanessa Redgrave gets under the skin of her character very movingly.

This is something of a terrible adaptation of one of my all-time favorite books. Redgrave is a great actress, but here she simply shuffles about the screen without much ambition. The subject matter itself is so difficult to bring to film anyway (the entire book is a thought process!), that I'm surprised they even tried. I was interested in the young Clarissa scenes. They were a lot better than the "contemporary" sections.

[The] complex story structure is virtually impossible to reproduce on the screen. But thanks to Redgrave's dazzling turn and some other fine performances, Gorris and screenwriter Eileen Atkins come reasonably close.
