I watched this last night and can't stop thinking about it - definitely a sign of a good movie. Really felt for the kids and the pressure that they were under, but also very inspiring - work hard to achieve something special.

This was such an interesting documentary both as a film watcher and as a former school musician. The passion of Mrs Carey for music is evident and its impact and manifestation on the two girls that we follow throughout the documentary is both familiar and unexpected. Having been involved both as a player in school music concerts and to a much lesser extent involved in some minor backstage concert aspects, I can understand where the students and teachers are coming from. As a documentary, it is not a saccharinely sweet with the inspirational, speech tug at the heartstrings moment that infects many Hollywood films. Instead, the fly on the wall approach successfully works in this documentary.

Mrs Carey's Concert delivers an emotionally charged and satisfying experience.

Well made, but I hated it. Mrs Carey's behaviour verges on child abuse. She is the kind of narcissistic bully that puts children all over the world off music for life.

The music is stunning and the two students at the centre of this doco are fascinating in their distinctive way, but the filmmakers may have wanted the journey to the titular concert to be a bit more dramatic than it is. Mrs Carey herself is no doubt passionate about teaching her students to be the best classical musicians possible, but her role as inspirational figure takes a back seat most of the time to the school girls and their internal politics. A lot of the time though it feels like there's a concerted effort to squeeze out dramatic conflict that just isn't there. One thing's for sure, it makes you want to book tickets to the next concert at the Sydney Opera house.
