Mr. Freedom (1969)

Mr. Freedom, a bellowing good-ol'-boy superhero decked out in copious football padding, jets to France to cut off a Commie invasion from Switzerland. A destructive, arrogant patriot in tight pants, Freedom joins forces with Marie Madeleine to combat lefty freethinkers, as well as the insidious evildoers Moujik Man and inflatable Red China Man, culminating in a star-spangled showdown.

I am torn on this one. On one hand, the idea of America's greatest superhero, Mr. Freedom (decked out in red, white and blue football equipment and going about his daily life in a cowboy hat) fighting political incorrectness in France in the form of Communists in all red and an inflatable dragon representing China is kitschy, unique and hilarious. On the other, the joke surprisingly gets old fast and you can see where things are going before you even get there. But still, for scenes that depict the US Embassy as a bulk grocery store a la Wal-Mart with go-go dancing girls and an interesting scene involving a character called "Christ Man," you owe it to yourself to check it out if you can. Certainly not for everyone but the film does have its merits in crazy visuals and ideas and a plot that is oddly timely, even if it drags in the last third.

Well dated over the top film from William Klein that starts out as a feast for the eyes satire of American ideals that becomes far too absurd for it's own good. Klein does do a fine job with what he is trying to make, but by the time you are half way through with the film the craziness just becomes boring and is no longer any fun. Still a nice piece of 70's werid cinema that will still make you happy if you think you've seen everything. Don't miss the credits.

Perhaps I was too drunk to appreciate the irony of this film when I saw it but, to me, It seemed like a bad high school project with ham actors on a very low budget making in-jokes. It was all a bit too whacky for me, Sorry Koudi.

Full of funny ideas and interesting, cool-looking design concepts, but overall not that great of a movie. The guy playing Mr. Freedom is really good and perfectly cast, but eventually he gets boring playing the same note for 95 minutes.

William Klein's over the top satire is just too hokey to be really effective on any level. Though Klein does manage some of his frantic visual cleverness, the humor is too broad and the political commentary is beyond obvious. Interesting and ambitious, but it drowns itself out in cheesiness.
