Mr. Freedom (1969)

Mr. Freedom, a bellowing good-ol'-boy superhero decked out in copious football padding, jets to France to cut off a Commie invasion from Switzerland. Satirically charged comedy that's more concerned with venting its own anger than telling a good story. Not helping matters is a decidedly obtuse commentary on American imperialism. By exaggerating the subject matter beyond all recognition, William Klein has created a work of self-serious irrelevance. But maybe that's what he wanted.

An idiotic patriotic American superhero fights surreal Commie villains and rioting Frenchmen in Paris. It's not exactly a subtle satire, but the parodied ultimate right-wing views make this a sheer delight.

Satirizing Vietnam-era far right American extremism would seem like a goldmine for humor, but this film gets tedious quickly and the jokes mostly fall flat. I do give it points for the amusingly ridiculous costumes worn by Mr. Freedom. Sometimes even Criterion/Eclipse picks dumb movies to release on dvd.

Wild and over-the-top, but as such a just response to the great bulk of American culture (not to mention the even worse reality beneath the cultural trash heap).

Has some incredibly hilarious bits, and is a massive precursor to the politically incorrect satirical humor of people like Trey Parker and Matt Stone, though its effect seems to wear out by the end.
