The biggest problem with movies in general (from big-budget blockbusters to micro-budgeted indies) is that most directors forget that films must be digestible on both an immediate "enjoyability" level, and also on a long-term intellectual level. (Well, they either forget, or they are unable to accomplish the feat of presenting both levels effectively.) "Midlothia" is a commendable example of a film that deftly balances both two sides, creating an entertaining and intriguing film-watching experience. The film follows Fred (Bill Sebastian) as he haphazardly - sometimes violently - uncovers the hidden truths surrounding his closest friends. Far from simple plot points, these truths profoundly change how Fred views his friends and, most importantly, himself. Production design, cinematography and editing is better than most micro-budgeted indies, and while the cast is very small, the acting is believable. I highly recommend this entertaining film.

I was blown away when I watched this. I hadn't heard much about it, but a friend lent it to me and I loved it. The look of this film is amazing, and though the film is powerful and dramatic, it still leaves space for a very unique brand of humor. It reminded me of David Gordon Green's early films. In smaller films there is usually a gaping hole in one or more of the performances, but each and every character is filled with so much life and vigor that you forget there is no big budget tricks, just great writing and some work by a group of actors with huge futures. Writer/director and star, Bill Sebastian, is a stand out amongst stand outs, and deserves a lot of credit for creating a small film that feels epic in emotional scope and has you engaged throughout. With our short attention spans nowadays, that is no easy feat.

This film is a dark satire, while it serves as commentary on the undereducated poor of industrialized rural communities of Texas. In real life, the city of Midlothian itself is a an extremely depressing place to be. (It's on the EPA watchlist as one of the unhealthiest places to live in America; residents of Midlothian call it the Cement Capital of Texas.) I'm frustrated, because I can't express my rating as a percentage. My rating is not arbitrary. I give it an 82% rating, based on acting, story, directing, editing, and other criteria. Bill Sebastian, the filmmaker, adapted this film from a stage play, so it's not as action-oriented as Bill's ninja film, nor is there as much slapstick humor.

Decent story line, not painfully bad acting, but very B-grade.
